
Türkiye tests 5G-enabled robotic surgery on military ship TCG Anadolu
Türkiye has recently carried out a ground-breaking test of robotic surgery aboard its military amphibious assault ship, the TCG Anadolu.
The project, which marks a significant milestone for the country’s defence and technology sectors, involves a strategic partnership between the Turkish Naval Forces Command and Kocaeli University.
The primary objective was to test remote medical support during surgical procedures by leveraging advanced 5G technology. The test itself focused on validating the efficiency and safety of performing robotic-assisted surgical interventions via remote control.
The TCG Anadolu, which is classified with Role 2 medical capacity, served as the platform for the demonstration.
This classification indicates that the ship is equipped to provide advanced trauma care and possesses surgical facilities, making it an ideal environment for such an innovative trial. At the heart of this technological achievement is the use of 5G networks.
This generation of mobile technology is essential for the precise control of robotic surgical instruments, as it provides extremely low latency and high bandwidth.
This enables doctors to guide or perform operations from shore or another location, regardless of the physical distance from the ship, with near real-time control and visual feedback. This development is viewed as a historical ' first' within the concept of ' Mavi Vatan' (Blue Homeland), which highlights Türkiye’s maritime doctrine and geopolitical interests.
By implementing such advanced medical technology, Türkiye strengthens its ability to provide life-saving and sophisticated medical treatment to its personnel far from the coast.

If the country succeeds in becoming the first in the world to fully implement 5G-supported robotic surgery on a Role 2-level military ship, it could set a new global standard.
