Alanya avocado seeks EU status for international recognition
The Alanya Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ALTSO) has taken a significant step towards promoting the region' s agricultural products on the international stage.
They have officially submitted an application for EU Geographical Indication (GI) status for the Alanya avocado.
This initiative could drastically increase the value and recognition of Alanya’s “green gold” on the world market, marking a pivotal moment for the local economy and product development.
A Geographical Indication is a protection that links a product' s quality, reputation, or other characteristics to its geographical origin.
If the application is approved by the European Union, the Alanya avocado will receive legal protection against misuse and imitation, ensuring its authenticity and promoting its unique qualities internationally. This is not the first time ALTSO has taken such measures.
The initiative for the Alanya avocado follows a previous application for similar protection for Alanya carob, another vital agricultural product from the region.
Both of these actions are central components of ALTSO’s overall strategy to strengthen the branding of Alanya’s distinct agricultural products and position them more effectively on the global market.
The submission of the application took place during a ceremony hosted by ALTSO, underscoring the local importance and commitment to elevating Alanya’s agricultural sector.
With international recognition, the region' s avocado production could experience increased demand, better prices for local farmers, and a strengthened economic future for the entire area.
