Alanya Celebrates First Controlled Salep Harvest
The Alanya Chamber of Agriculture (Ziraat Odası) has successfully completed its first controlled salep harvest in Kestel, marking a significant step towards sustainable agricultural practices in the region. Salep, traditionally derived from wild orchid tubers and used in the popular Turkish drink, ice cream, and desserts, has faced concerns over overharvesting and endangered species. This new cultivation project aims to address these issues.
Through extensive research and development, the Chamber has established a local production base for salep, a commodity with high national and international market value. The successful harvest demonstrates Alanya’s potential to diversify its agricultural output, reducing reliance on traditional crops and creating new income streams for local farmers.
This initiative strengthens the local economy, positioning Alanya as a hub for agricultural innovation. It is expected to create jobs and attract investment in the sector, while also enriching the culinary experience for both residents and tourists with fresh, locally produced salep products.
