Alanya Renews Push for Province Status with ’82’ Plate Code

Alanya’s long-standing ambition to become an independent province, complete with its own unique ’82’ vehicle plate code, was recently reiterated by Abdurrahman Başkan, a Nationalist Action Party (MHP) Member of Parliament for Antalya. Başkan highlighted this objective during his speech at the MHP Alanya District Presidency’s ordinary congress on Sunday, July 5, 2026.

Achieving ‘province status’ (il) would represent a significant administrative upgrade from Alanya’s current ‘district status’ (ilçe). As a province, Alanya would gain its own governor, enhanced administrative autonomy, and direct allocation of state resources, leading to greater local control over development and decision-making, independent of Antalya province.

The ’82’ plate code symbolises and practically marks this new administrative identity. Each Turkish province has a unique two-digit code on vehicle registration plates. A new code for Alanya would clearly signify its new status, potentially leading to improved public services, strengthened infrastructure, and more targeted investments in local facilities, from healthcare to tourism.

This change could also streamline administrative processes by bringing decision-making closer to the local population. Başkan emphasised that this goal is a priority for MHP, signalling continued political commitment to realise Alanya’s strategic ambition for provincial status, a development that could significantly shape the region’s future growth.
