Allegations of a ‘VIP list’ for 100 apartments in case against Istanbul Mayor İmamoğlu

An alleged ' VIP list' featuring 100 apartments has surfaced during the ongoing trial of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

The case involves charges against an ' organised criminal group for financial gain'.

This revelation emerged during the second hearing, in which a witness provided a detailed account of the sales process for a municipal housing project.

Nezahet Kurt, who testified on the sixth day of the hearing, spoke about the sales process for the KİPTAŞ Pendik Arkatlı Evler project.

KİPTAŞ is the public housing corporation affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality.

Kurt claimed that she received three separate lists encompassing a total of 350 apartments in the project.

She further explained that she was instructed not to sell a specific ' VIP list' consisting of 100 apartments, an order she followed. The trial of Ekrem İmamoğlu, a prominent figure in the Turkish opposition and a potential presidential candidate, is being closely monitored both domestically and internationally.

Allegations of irregularities in the sale of public housing are politically sensitive, particularly for a municipal administration.

This could potentially bolster a narrative of corruption or favouritism, which is often a contentious issue in Turkish politics.

Such accusations carry broader significance as they may impact public trust in local government and the overall fight against corruption. İmamoğlu has previously been the subject of several legal proceedings, which his supporters frequently view as politically motivated attempts to discredit him and weaken the opposition. KİPTAŞ plays a vital role in providing affordable housing for residents in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city.

Allegations regarding the existence of a ' VIP list' for homes sold by a municipal company raise questions regarding transparency and equal treatment in public services.

According to the testimony, 100 apartments were kept outside the ordinary sales process, implying a selective distribution.

Further developments in the trial and any subsequent confirmation or rejection of these claims will be crucial in shedding light on the events and their consequences for İmamoğlu’s political career and the management of the Istanbul Municipality.

The trial is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge in upcoming hearings.
