Antalya Authorities Impose Significant Fine for Sea Turtle Protection
Antalya authorities have implemented a substantial administrative fine of 699,245 Turkish Lira (TL) for actions threatening vulnerable Caretta Caretta sea turtles and their nesting sites on local beaches. The new penalty specifically targets activities such as damaging Caretta Caretta nests, driving vehicles on the sand, and lighting fires, all of which can disrupt the turtles’ life cycle and ecosystem.
Caretta Caretta sea turtles are a globally protected species known to utilise Antalya’s beaches as crucial breeding grounds. These stringent fines underscore the authorities’ enhanced commitment to environmental protection and the preservation of the region’s rich biodiversity, vital for both natural ecosystems and tourism.
The ban on driving vehicles on beaches aims to prevent nest destruction and sand compaction, essential for successful egg development. Similarly, the prohibition of fires protects beaches from pollution, fire hazards, and disturbances that could deter nocturnal turtles during egg-laying.
The high fines serve as a clear deterrent for all individuals using beaches in the Antalya region, including areas like Alanya where Caretta Caretta are also present.
