ASELSAN Advances Quantum Technology with Domestic Processor
Turkish defence industry leader ASELSAN, in in collaboration with the Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB), has launched a project to develop a superconducting quantum processor (QPU) using local and national resources. This initiative underscores Turkey’s ambition for self-sufficiency in advanced technology, particularly for critical components in quantum computing.
A QPU is the core of a quantum machine, utilising quantum bits (qubits) to perform complex calculations far beyond the capabilities of traditional supercomputers. National development of such a processor will grant Turkey access to cutting-edge computational power, with significant implications for fields like cryptography, material science, drug development, artificial intelligence, and national defence, while also enhancing cybersecurity and digital sovereignty.
This strategic project aligns with Turkey’s long-term goal of increasing independence in critical technologies, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains, especially for its defence sector. The initiative is expected to boost Turkey’s academic and research infrastructure, foster innovation, attract talent, and position the country as a key player in the global quantum technology landscape, potentially creating new industries and jobs.
