ASELSAN secures $195 million radar contract with Turkish defence industry

Turkish defence electronics company ASELSAN has signed a significant contract worth 195 million US dollars with the Turkish Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB).

The agreement, which was entered into on 7 October 2026, concerns the procurement of advanced radar systems.

This strategic investment highlights Turkey’s commitment to strengthening its national defence capabilities and reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers for critical defence technology. ASELSAN is a key player in Turkey’s defence technology sector and aims to develop and manufacture solutions locally.

The SSB, for its part, is the government' s primary body responsible for directing and coordinating Turkey’s defence industrial efforts, with a particular focus on promoting domestic production and innovation.

The contract underscores the importance of close cooperation between national industrial companies and state institutions to achieve strategic defence objectives. Radar systems are indispensable in modern defence and play a critical role in surveillance, target detection and the control of weapons systems.

They are used to detect aircraft, ships, missiles and other threats, as well as for border surveillance and air defence.

By providing real-time information about the surroundings, radar systems contribute to maintaining situational awareness and enable rapid responses to potential dangers. Investment in proprietary radar systems is vital for Turkey’s national security.

The country’s geographic location and regional challenges require robust and independent defence capabilities.

The development and production of these systems domestically ensures not only access to bespoke solutions but also control over critical technology that is essential for sovereignty and operational freedom in the armed forces. The contract represents a significant financial contribution to ASELSAN and the broader Turkish defence industry.

It stimulates further research and development, creates jobs for highly qualified engineers and technicians, and contributes to the transfer of technology.

Such investments strengthen Turkey’s position as a player in the development of advanced defence technology, which may also open up increased export potential in the future. This agreement is expected to have positive ripple effects for the Turkish economy and the technology sector as a whole.

It demonstrates a continuous commitment to building a robust and self-sufficient defence industry that can meet both national needs and international requirements.

For Turkey, this is an important step towards full technological independence within critical defence areas.
