ASELSAN showcases first GÖKBAĞI satellite as part of major space programme

The Turkish defence and technology giant ASELSAN has unveiled the first physical satellite for its ambitious GÖKBAĞI project.

The reveal was conducted by CEO Ahmet Akyol on 5 October 2026, during the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya.

With plans for a constellation of nearly 200 satellites intended to operate in space, this represents a significant milestone for Turkey' s aerospace ambitions and its technological sovereignty.

The news was first reported by TRT Haber, which was granted a viewing of the satellite. During the event, Ahmet Akyol emphasised that this marked the first time the actual physical form of a GÖKBAĞI project satellite had been shown to the public.

The unveiling at such a prominent international conference hosted in Turkey highlights the country' s growing role in space technology and signals a robust commitment to advanced future solutions.

The presence of a large international delegation provided the project with a global platform. The GÖKBAĞI project, with its planned constellation of nearly 200 satellites, is a massive and strategically significant undertaking.

A satellite constellation consists of a network of coordinated satellites working together to cover a vast area or provide continuous coverage for various missions.

Although the specific functions of the GÖKBAĞI satellites were not detailed, the scale suggests they will be capable of supporting a range of critical applications, from communication and Earth observation to navigation and security.

Developing such a system domestically reduces Turkey’s reliance on foreign technology and services, which is essential for national security and independence. ASELSAN’s leading role in the project underscores the company' s expertise in advanced systems and integration, having traditionally focused on the defence industry.

The transfer of this competence to the space sector demonstrates a broader technological evolution within Turkey.

The project not only stimulates research and development but also drives growth within the national space industry, creating jobs and cultivating critical expertise in engineering and space science. The deployment of such an extensive satellite constellation will position Turkey as a more prominent player in the global space market.

This could open doors for international cooperation, technology exports, and increased influence within international space forums.

For European partners and NATO allies, Turkey’s enhanced capacity in aerospace could signal new opportunities for collaboration on space-based infrastructure and services, potentially strengthening collective security and interoperability. The GÖKBAĞI project is a clear expression of Turkey' s ambition to utilise space for national development, security, and economic growth.

By investing in home-grown space technology, Turkey is taking a strategic step to secure its future digital infrastructure and defence capabilities.

The forthcoming deployment of nearly 200 satellites will undoubtedly have far-reaching consequences for the country' s technological landscape and its standing on the international stage.
