Corruption network allegations against Istanbul Municipality and İmamoğlu advisor
Fresh allegations of corruption have been directed at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and individuals within its leadership.
During his defence in a court case, businessman Necmettin Şimşek alleged that the İBB operates a bribery network through its subsidiary, KİPTAŞ.
These claims surfaced during a legal process referred to as the case concerning the " Ekrem İmamoğlu Organised Crime Group," where Şimşek provided testimony regarding the alleged incidents. In his statement, Şimşek claims he was coerced into paying 500,000 US dollars.
As part of this demand, he allegedly paid a 200,000-dollar deposit to an advisor of Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
According to Şimşek’s account, the advisor promised to provide a solution—both legal and political—to an issue concerning a school that Şimşek had established with his own capital.
The businessman further described how this school project, which he financed, was allegedly presented as if it had been " gifted away" for other purposes as part of what he described as a " show." Şimşek’s frustration was evident in his remarks, as he emphasised that the matter was never resolved as promised by İmamoğlu' s advisor, nor were the 200,000 dollars in funds returned.
These accusations cast a critical light on the operations of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and its associated companies, particularly KİPTAŞ, which is the municipality' s housing development and construction arm.
As the mayor of Turkey' s largest city, Ekrem İmamoğlu is a central figure in the nation' s political landscape.
He represents the main opposition party, the Republican People' s Party (CHP), and is widely recognised as a potential future presidential candidate.
Accusations of corruption directed at his administration or his inner circle in Istanbul thus carry significant national political implications and attract attention far beyond the boundaries of local politics.
