Electric and hybrid cars account for over half of vehicle sales in Turkey

For the first time, electric and hybrid vehicles have accounted for more than half of total car sales in Turkey.

Between January and July 2026, 259,970 such vehicles were sold, representing 51.7 per cent of the overall automotive market.

This marks a significant turning point for Turkey' s automotive industry and consumer choice.

Recent data from the Bloomberg HT RSS feed indicates that Turkey is in the midst of a rapid transition towards more environmentally friendly transport solutions.

With over half of all new cars being either electric or hybrid, this signals a shift in consumer preferences and an accelerated adoption of new technology in the country.

The sales volume of nearly 260,000 units underlines the scale of this development. This market shift indicates that Turkish car buyers are increasingly prioritising fuel efficiency, reduced emissions, and newer technology.

The trend may be driven by a combination of rising fuel prices, potential incentives for green vehicles—though these are not specifically mentioned in the source—and a general awareness of environmental issues.

For car manufacturers and dealers in Turkey, this means that strategies and investments must be directed towards this growing segment. The consequences for Turkey' s economy are significant.

A transition to electric and hybrid vehicles will impact the country' s energy consumption and could potentially reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels over time.

This will also drive investment in new infrastructure, such as charging facilities, and create new jobs within the service and maintenance sector for electric vehicles.

The national automotive industry is facing a restructuring that will affect both production lines and supply chains.

In the long term, this trend could help strengthen Turkey' s position as a market for sustainable transport, which may have positive effects on international investment and trade relations within the automotive sector.

The rapid growth in this segment underscores Turkey' s dynamic adaptability in the global car market, with clear implications for both households and businesses.
