Fed Governor Waller delivers key message on interest rates at Istanbul forum

Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller recently participated in the esteemed Istanbul Economic Forum, an event hosted by the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (TCMB).

During the forum, Waller delivered a clear message regarding the necessity of a strict monetary policy to combat inflation.

He stated that further interest rate hikes will most likely be unavoidable in order to successfully slow down the rate of price increases. Waller' s statement comes at a time when Turkey itself is fighting a difficult battle against high inflation, and the central bank has implemented significant interest rate hikes in recent months to stabilise the economy.

The presence of a prominent representative from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) at a Turkish event, combined with his reflections on inflation control, underscores the global relevance of the topic and the importance of disciplined monetary policy. The message from Fed Governor Waller, while general in nature regarding the necessity of rate hikes to combat inflation, carries a particular resonance in Turkey.

The country has experienced a period of persistently high inflation, which has eroded household purchasing power and created uncertainty within the business community.

The TCMB, under its new leadership, has shifted direction toward more orthodox monetary policy measures, including sharp interest rate increases, to regain price stability and investor confidence. Waller' s statements can be interpreted as indirect support for the TCMB’s current strategy, which is based on the principle that higher interest rates are a crucial tool to cool down an overheated economy and reduce inflationary pressure.

The views of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other global financial institutions on monetary policy often align with this message, providing further legitimacy to the strategy currently being pursued in Ankara. For Turkish businesses and households, the discussion regarding further interest rate hikes has direct and significant consequences.

Higher interest rates mean more expensive loans, which can dampen investments and consumption in the short term.

The goal, however, is to create a more stable economic future with lower inflation, which over time will strengthen the Turkish lira, increase predictability for businesses, and improve the purchasing power of households. For tourists and foreign residents in Turkey, a successful fight against inflation and a more stable currency could contribute to a more predictable and attractive economic framework.

The costs of goods and services will become more stable, and the exchange rate is likely to experience less volatility.

These are important factors for everyone planning to visit, invest in, or live in Turkey, providing a backdrop for the country' s economic future.
