Google establishes a dedicated channel for the removal of personal data in Turkey

Google has established a dedicated application channel specifically for users in Turkey who wish to remove unwanted personal data from its search results.

This significant step for privacy in the digital sphere was announced by Professor Dr.

Faruk Bilir, head of Turkey’s Personal Data Protection Authority (KVKK).

The initiative highlights a growing national awareness regarding individual rights to control one' s own digital footprint. According to Bilir, Google has opened a unique platform where Turkish citizens can submit requests for the deletion of information.

The process is designed to be direct and efficient.

Users must provide the specific information they wish to have removed, and Google subsequently commits to processing the request. The new application pathway dictates that when a user submits a data removal request, Google is obliged to provide feedback within 30 days.

The response will inform the applicant whether the information can be removed or not.

This time frame has been established to ensure that the process remains transparent and responsive to citizens' concerns regarding their digital presence. This development reflects the significance of the ' right to be forgotten', a concept that has gained increasing international recognition, particularly in Europe with the European Union' s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The Turkish approach demonstrates how national authorities and global technology companies can collaborate to adapt international principles to local legislation and requirements. The introduction of this bespoke channel for Turkey represents a substantial improvement in the control Turkish citizens have over their own data.

It provides individuals with a concrete tool to manage sensitive or outdated personal information that may appear in search engines.

The initiative helps to strengthen trust in digital services and promotes more responsible handling of personal information on the internet. For Turkey, this marks an important step in the work to modernise digital infrastructure and strengthen e-government services.

It also demonstrates a proactive stance from the KVKK in ensuring that global technology giants comply with national privacy principles.

The measure helps to set a standard for how international platforms should adapt to local regulations to protect the digital rights of citizens.
