Diving in Türkiye
Türkiye has many good diving spots along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. You can explore clear water, caves, rock walls, marine life and wrecks, whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver.
About
Diving in Türkiye is a popular activity in many coastal towns, especially along the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Kaş, Fethiye, Bodrum, Marmaris, Kemer, Antalya and Alanya are among the places where you can find organised dive trips for both beginners and experienced divers.
For many travellers, diving is an easy way to experience a different side of Türkiye. Instead of only beaches, pools and boat trips, you get to see the landscape below the surface, with rocks, small caves, fish, underwater walls and some wrecks.
Kaş is often considered one of the best diving destinations in Türkiye. It has varied dive sites, good visibility and a more established diving scene. Other places, such as Alanya and Antalya, often offer more holiday-style diving with introductory dives and relaxed trips for first-time divers.
You do not always need previous diving experience. Many dive centres offer introductory dives with an instructor, basic training and equipment included. Certified divers can usually choose more advanced dives based on their level and experience.
Where it fits in
Diving works well as a day activity during a regular coastal holiday. It can be combined with a boat trip, swimming, snorkelling and a relaxed day at sea.
If you are travelling mainly for diving, Kaş is a natural choice. If you simply want to try diving for one day during your holiday, places like Alanya, Antalya, Kemer, Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye are good options.
Diving is also a good choice if you want a break from busy beaches and bazaars. It offers a quieter and more focused experience, where the pace slows down and nature takes the main role.
What to expect
A typical diving trip often starts with meeting at the harbour or being picked up from your hotel. The boat then heads out to a suitable dive site. Beginners receive a short briefing about equipment, breathing and safety before entering the water with an instructor.
Underwater, you may see rock formations, small caves, fish, underwater walls and some wrecks. Visibility depends on weather, currents, location and season, but many areas have clear and comfortable water through much of the summer.
For certified divers, there are several interesting sites with deeper routes, wrecks and more varied underwater landscapes. Kaş is especially known for this, but Fethiye, Bodrum and Marmaris also have dive sites suitable for more experienced divers.
For beginners, the experience is mainly about feeling safe and relaxed. Most introductory dives are short and controlled, with the instructor close by at all times. The most important thing is to breathe calmly, follow instructions and avoid pushing yourself beyond your comfort level.
Practical planning
- Choose a dive centre with good reviews and clear safety routines
- Tell the centre whether you are a beginner or a certified diver
- Bring swimwear, a towel, sunscreen and extra clothes
- Bring your diving certificate if you are already certified
- Check whether transport, lunch, drinks and equipment are included
- Ask how many dives are included in the price
- Do not drink alcohol before diving
- Eat lightly before the trip, but avoid a heavy meal just before diving
- Check cancellation rules in case of bad weather
- Set aside at least half a day, often more if the trip is by boat
Tips before you go
- Book early during high season
- Choose a morning trip if you want calmer sea conditions
- Do not dive on the same day as you fly
- Tell the instructor if you feel unsure or nervous
- Do not push yourself into deeper dives than you are comfortable with
- Do not touch fish, coral, rocks or objects underwater
- Use reef-friendly sunscreen if possible
- Bring some cash in case card payment is not available
- Choose a serious operator instead of only the lowest price
- Check whether photos and videos are included or cost extra
Good to know
Introductory dives normally do not require previous experience, but you should feel comfortable enough in the water to follow instructions. People with heart problems, serious asthma, ear problems or other relevant health issues should check with a doctor before diving.
Diving in Türkiye is often cheaper than in many other European holiday destinations, but quality varies. It is better to choose a dive centre based on safety, experience and reviews rather than price alone.
Remember that diving depends on weather conditions. Wind, waves and poor visibility can cause trips to be changed, postponed or cancelled. For that reason, it is smart not to leave your dive until the very last day of your holiday.
