Istanbul targets year-round cruising: Significant growth expected in winter traffic
Istanbul aims to become a year-round cruise destination, with new initiatives pointing toward significant growth during the winter months.
The city is currently establishing itself as a central hub for cruise tourism in Turkey, with a clearly stated goal of extending the cruise season across all twelve months of the year.
These ambitions are being driven by the fact that several cruise lines are committing to routes to Istanbul throughout the winter.
MSC Cruises already operates scheduled winter departures, and they are now being joined by AROYA Cruises, which will also offer winter services to the Turkish metropolis.
This expansion is expected to lead to a sharp increase in cruise activity during the winter season. According to forecasts, the number of cruise ship calls in Istanbul during the winter period will increase by a full 143 per cent.
Simultaneously, the number of passengers arriving in Istanbul by cruise ship during the winter is expected to rise by an impressive 188 per cent.
This signals a marked change in the city' s tourism profile and visitor patterns.
For travellers, this means more options for visiting Istanbul outside of the traditional peak season.
Increased capacity and more departures make it easier to find a cruise holiday to the city during the cooler months, which may appeal to those who prefer a quieter experience with fewer crowds and potentially lower prices.
The development will likely also contribute to a more even distribution of tourists throughout the year, which could relieve pressure on the most popular attractions and areas during the summer months.
