Japanese Ambassador Praises Türkiye’s TEKNOFEST and Advances in Defence Technology
Tamura Masami, Japan' s Ambassador to Ankara, has recently praised TEKNOFEST, the world' s largest aviation, space and technology festival, and Türkiye' s robust focus on defence technology.
The ambassador stated that he finds Türkiye' s ' moves in defence technology very beautiful' and described the event as ' surprisingly excellent'.
This recognition from a diplomat representing a leading technological nation like Japan underscores the increasing international attention directed toward Türkiye' s innovation and defence industries. TEKNOFEST is an annual event that draws millions of participants and is renowned for fostering innovation and technological development among young people.
The festival, which is organised by the Turkish Technology Team Foundation (T3 Foundation) with substantial state support, serves as a platform for inspiring a new generation to engage in science, engineering and technology.
It presents a broad spectrum of projects, ranging from drones and robotics to space technology and artificial intelligence, whilst offering competitions and exhibitions that stimulate creativity and problem-solving. In recent years, Türkiye has invested heavily in building its own national defence industry.
The goal is to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers and strengthen the country’s strategic independence.
This commitment has resulted in the development of advanced systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), combat aircraft, missiles and naval platforms.
Products from the Turkish defence industry have also found markets internationally, which contributes to Türkiye' s economy and diplomatic influence. TEKNOFEST plays a central role in Türkiye' s vision of becoming a technologically self-sufficient nation.
The festival is more than just a fair; it is an ecosystem that connects students, academics, entrepreneurs and industry leaders.
Through competitions in various categories, from robotics and rocket design to AI solutions and autonomous vehicles, young talents are encouraged to develop practical skills and present their innovations.
This contributes directly to building a talent pool that is crucial for future development in both civilian and military technology. The focus on defence-related technology during TEKNOFEST mirrors a national priority.
By allowing young engineers and researchers to work on challenges that have direct applications in defence, Türkiye ensures a continuous supply of ideas and expertise.
The festival also provides a unique opportunity for defence companies to identify and recruit future experts, as well as to showcase their own advancements to a wide audience, including international delegations and the press. Ambassador Tamura Masami’s comments are particularly significant given Japan' s position as a global leader in technology and innovation.
His positive surprise at the quality and scale of TEKNOFEST, alongside his praise for Türkiye' s defence-industrial progress, can be interpreted as a sign of growing respect for Türkiye’s technological capacity.
Such international recognition could potentially open doors for further cooperation, investment or export opportunities for Turkish technology firms. For Türkiye, this type of international attention represents more than just praise.
It validates the country' s strategy of investing in home-grown technology, especially within the defence sector.
It helps to strengthen the country' s reputation as an innovative nation and a reliable partner in technological projects, both regionally and globally.
This can have positive ripple effects for Türkiye' s economy, labour market and standing in international forums, including cooperation with allies in NATO and Europe.
