Minister Kacır: Five out of eight Turkish ‘Turcorns’ founded by women

The Turkish Minister of Industry and Technology, Mehmet Fatih Kacır, has announced a significant milestone for the country' s technology sector.

He revealed that five of Turkey’s eight “Turcorns”—technology companies that have achieved a valuation of over one billion dollars—were established by female entrepreneurs.

This development underscores the growing influence and success of women within Turkey’s entrepreneurship ecosystem. The statement from Minister Kacır, made on 20 October 2026, emphasises the pivotal role Turkish women play in the nation' s “Milli Teknoloji Hamlesi,” or “National Technology Initiative.” He highlighted that the extensive knowledge, talent, and determination of women in science and technology are a vital driving force behind this initiative, which is intended to strengthen Turkey’s technological independence and capacity for innovation.

The concept of a “Turcorn” is a local term for unicorn companies—that is, technology startups that have reached a valuation of over one billion US dollars.

These companies are considered central indicators of a country' s innovative power and its ability to create globally competitive businesses.

The fact that the majority of Turkey' s Turcorns were founded by women signals a dynamic and increasingly inclusive approach to technological entrepreneurship in the country. This trend does not merely showcase successful female entrepreneurs; it also helps to inspire a new generation of women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM fields).

The minister' s statement serves as recognition of the hard work and innovative mindset that foster growth and diversity within the Turkish technology sector, both of which are essential for sustained innovation and economic progress. The “National Technology Initiative” is a broader state strategy that aims to promote Turkey’s domestically produced technology, reduce dependence on foreign technology, and position the country as a leading player in critical technological areas.

The development of Turcorns, especially those led by women, is a direct manifestation of the initiative' s success in fostering a robust environment for innovation. Such success stories are vital for Turkey’s economic and industrial development.

They create jobs, attract investment, and build the expertise necessary to compete in a globalised economy.

The strong representation of female entrepreneurs within this elite group of technology companies indicates a deeper and more inclusive culture of innovation, which could secure Turkey’s future position as a technological nation.
