Near-catastrophe at Antalya Airport: Aircraft separated by just 150 metres

A situation that could have ended in catastrophe was averted at Antalya Airport when two passenger aircraft approaching the runway suddenly found themselves with only 150 metres of vertical separation between them.

The incident, which involved two planes heading towards one of Turkey' s busiest international airports, required immediate action.

Thanks to a swift and correct manoeuvre by a TUI pilot, both aircraft were able to land safely, and a serious accident was avoided.

Antalya Airport is a central hub for tourism in the Mediterranean region and serves as the main gateway for millions of travellers every year, including many Nordic tourists and foreign residents who visit or live in the Alanya and Antalya regions.

Safety at the airport and in the airspace above is therefore of vital importance to both visitors and permanent residents. Aviation is built upon strict safety protocols and multiple redundant systems designed to prevent such incidents.

Although the exact causes of why the vertical separation became so small in this instance have not been specified, the event underscores the importance of the constant vigilance of air traffic controllers and pilots, as well as their ability to react quickly to unforeseen situations.

Pilot skill and training are a critical component of aviation safety, as this situation clearly demonstrates.

The TUI pilot' s decisive manoeuvre illustrates how individual actions in emergency situations can have a direct impact on the outcome and ensure the well-being of passengers.

It is testament to the fact that the strict requirements placed on pilots and their ability to handle pressured situations contribute to overall safety in aviation. For tourists, Nordic travellers, and foreign residents who are planning to visit or reside in the Alanya/Antalya region, it is reassuring to know that despite a potentially dangerous situation, the safety systems and human expertise functioned as intended.

Although such incidents are rare, the safe conclusion confirms that protocols are in place to protect air travellers, and that flight traffic to and from Antalya continues to operate with a focus on passenger safety.
