Police operation against counterfeit alcohol in Antalya and Istanbul

A major police operation targeting the trade in illegal and counterfeit alcohol has led to the arrest of four individuals in a coordinated raid across Antalya and Istanbul.

During the operation, authorities seized large quantities of methanol, thousands of empty bottles, and counterfeit tax stamps and labels.

These types of operations are crucial for protecting both local residents and the numerous tourists, including Nordic visitors and foreign expatriates residing in the popular Antalya region, from hazardous spirits. The case highlights the persistent threat that counterfeit alcohol poses to public health and safety.

Counterfeit spirits often contain toxic substances such as methanol, which can lead to severe health complications, including blindness, organ failure, and in the worst cases, death.

The authorities' efforts to uncover and halt the production and distribution of such goods are therefore of great importance to everyone who visits or lives in the region. During the simultaneous searches of several addresses, hundreds of litres of ethyl alcohol—commonly used as a base for illegal spirit production—were discovered, along with thousands of bottles ready to be filled.

Additionally, a significant number of fake tax stamps (the mandatory excise labels that confirm legal sale and taxation) and labels were confiscated.

This indicates an organised criminal enterprise that has attempted to mimic authentic alcohol products to deceive consumers. The police are putting extensive effort into tracking down and removing such illegal networks from the market.

This specific operation in Antalya and Istanbul demonstrates that the problem is widespread and requires continuous monitoring and action.

For tourists and residents, this represents an improvement in safety, but also serves as a reminder to exercise caution when purchasing alcohol. To avoid falling victim to counterfeit alcohol, it is recommended that one always purchases spirits from reputable shops or licensed establishments.

Check that bottles are unopened and that the seal is intact.

A genuine tax stamp must be present, and labels should appear professional, without visible errors or poor printing.

If you suspect a product is fake, avoid purchasing it and report your observation to local authorities. These types of operations are part of Turkey’s commitment to protecting consumers and maintaining a safe environment for tourism.

Continued vigilance from both authorities and consumers will be essential to combatting this form of crime, which directly impacts the safety and well-being of everyone in the Antalya region.
