President Erdoğan: Turkey’s Black Sea gas production to double

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced a significant increase in Turkey' s domestic natural gas production from the Black Sea.

Production is expected to double, reaching an impressive daily volume of 20 million cubic metres.

This ambitious target indicates that, starting from the beginning of 2027, one in three Turkish households will be able to utilise domestically produced natural gas.

The announcement highlights Turkey' s strategic commitment to increasing energy self-sufficiency and reducing import dependency, which serves as a critical element of the country' s economic policy. A doubling of Turkey' s natural gas production will have far-reaching economic consequences for the nation.

As a major net importer of energy, Turkey faces significant challenges related to its trade balance and the foreign exchange reserves required to fund imports.

By significantly increasing domestic production, this dependency is reduced, which can directly contribute to easing pressure on the national currency, the Turkish lira, and strengthening the country' s economic stability in the long term.

This is an important step during a period in which Turkey is actively working to stabilise its economy. For millions of Turkish households, access to domestically produced natural gas represents a potential relief for often strained household budgets.

Although the president' s statement does not specify direct price reductions, increased access to national resources will often contribute to more stable and predictable energy prices, as well as reduced vulnerability to international price fluctuations.

This is a particularly important factor for consumer purchasing power and the cost of living in a country that has for a long time experienced periods of high inflation, where energy costs have been a significant driver. The initiative is an integral part of Turkey' s broader economic policy, which is aimed at addressing structural challenges such as the chronic trade deficit and inflation.

A lower requirement for expensive energy imports will directly improve the country' s balance of payments, which is a key factor for the stability of the Turkish lira and general economic health.

Reduced expenditure for the state and energy companies related to energy imports can also free up significant funds that can be reinvested in other productive sectors of the economy, or contribute to financing social programmes. The expansion of natural gas production in the Black Sea is a strategic move that goes far beyond the energy sector alone and has profound implications for the entire Turkish economy.

It marks a significant investment in the country' s critical infrastructure and energy capacity, with positive knock-on effects for job creation within the sector, as well as the stimulation of technological development and local industry.

Such major energy projects are often catalysts for attracting further national and international investment and can strengthen Turkey' s ambition to position itself as an important regional energy hub. This commitment contributes to Turkey' s overarching goal of establishing a more self-sufficient, robust and resilient economy that is less exposed to external shocks and global commodity price fluctuations.

By securing a stable and growing energy supply for such a large portion of the population using domestic gas, Turkey is laying an important foundation for future economic growth and national prosperity.

This development will undoubtedly be closely monitored by international investors, trading partners and financial institutions that are analysing Turkey' s economic trajectory and political stability.
