Production of Turkey’s Türksat 7A Satellite to Begin This Year
Turkey is taking a significant step forward in its national space program as production of the new communications satellite, Türksat 7A, is set to commence shortly.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has announced that the production process is expected to begin before the end of 2026.
This announcement follows the finalisation of all necessary technical specifications and features for the satellite, signalling Turkey' s continued commitment to developing robust and independent space technology.
This project represents a continuation of the country' s strategic goal to strengthen its position within global satellite communications. This ambitious project is based on a collaboration between several key Turkish institutions and companies.
According to Minister Uraloğlu, negotiations and planning have been conducted with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), Turkey' s leading entity in aviation and space technology, as well as the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).
In addition, an unnamed private enterprise is involved, the same partner that contributed to the production of Türksat 6A.
This underscores a national strategy to build expertise and capacity through synergies between public and private sector players. Türksat 7A will be a geostationary communications satellite designed to deliver a wide range of services.
Such satellites are placed in an orbit 35,786 kilometres above the equator, where they remain in a fixed position relative to the Earth' s surface.
This makes them ideal for the continuous transmission of television signals, broadband services, and other data communications across large geographical areas.
For Turkey, a domestically developed satellite like Türksat 7A ensures sovereignty over its own communications infrastructure, which is critical for national security, economic development, and the digitisation of public services. Strengthening Turkey' s National Space ProgramThe development of Türksat 7A builds upon the successful experience of Türksat 6A, which was Turkey' s first fully domestically produced geostationary communications satellite.
The Türksat 6A project demonstrated the country' s ability to master every stage of satellite production, from design and development to integration and testing.
This continuity ensures that expertise and infrastructure developed in previous projects can be reused and improved, contributing to more efficient and cost-effective development of new aerospace systems.
Investment in such projects is crucial to maintaining a leading position in the increasingly competitive global aerospace industry. The commitment to national satellite projects like Türksat 7A has far-reaching benefits beyond pure technology development.
It stimulates growth in high-tech industries, promotes research and innovation at universities and research institutes, and creates skilled jobs.
On a strategic level, domestic production of satellites reduces Turkey' s reliance on foreign suppliers, which increases the country' s resilience against external pressure and provides greater flexibility in shaping its own digital and communications policy future.
This is particularly important at a time when digital infrastructure is increasingly viewed as critical national infrastructure. Potential for Regional and International ReachWith the launch of Türksat 7A, Turkey is expected to further expand its capacity for communication services, both domestically and internationally.
The new satellites will potentially increase coverage to a larger geographical area encompassing parts of Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
A strengthened national satellite fleet may also contribute to Turkey' s position as a provider of satellite services in the region, which could have economic significance through the export of capacity.
This project is an important element in Turkey' s long-term vision to be a significant player in the aerospace sector and to contribute to global digital connectivity.
