Tourists in Antalya enjoy a unique experience: First encounter with traditional oil wrestling
Tourists recently visiting the Korkuteli district in the Antalya region have, for the first time, been able to experience the fascinating world of traditional Turkish oil wrestling.
As part of the ' From Tradition to Future' project, foreign guests were invited to a series of events specifically designed to introduce them to this unique sport.
This initiative underscores the region' s desire to offer visitors deeper cultural insights that go far beyond the typical sun-and-sand beach holidays. The experience began with a visit to the Oil Wrestling Museum, where tourists were able to learn about the history and significance of this ancient sport.
They were then treated to special demonstration matches, allowing them to observe the techniques and strength of the wrestlers at close quarters.
For many, this proved to be an unforgettable encounter with a living tradition that is deeply rooted in Turkish identity.
The project aims to enrich the tourist experience in Antalya by highlighting authentic local customs and traditions.
By enabling visitors to participate in such cultural events, the organisers hope to forge a stronger connection between tourists and local culture, thereby promoting a more meaningful form of tourism. As a continuation of this experience, tourists are invited to attend the 35th Korkuteli Golden Cherry Oil Wrestling Festival, which takes place on 30 August.
A special tribune will be set up exclusively for them, ensuring they have the best possible view of the exciting matches.
This provides an excellent opportunity for both tourists and resident expatriates to experience one of the region' s most prestigious traditional sporting events in its full glory.
This endeavour contributes to positioning Antalya, and specifically Korkuteli, as a destination that offers much more than just sun and sand.
For Northern European tourists and foreign residents in the region, this means expanded access to unique cultural events that can enrich their stay and provide a deeper insight into Turkey' s rich cultural heritage.
