Turkey develops high-speed drone defense system

The Turkish state-owned defense corporation MKE (Makine ve Kimya Endüstrisi A. Ş.) has developed a pioneering defense system named TOLGA, designed to counter the rising threat posed by kamikaze drones and uncrewed maritime vehicles.

The system, which features an impressive firing rate of 3,200 rounds per minute from two barrels mounted in a single turret, represents a significant advancement in Turkish defense technology and directly addresses one of the most pressing challenges in modern warfare. The development of TOLGA serves as a direct response to the increasing use of uncrewed systems in conflict zones across the globe.

Kamikaze drones and uncrewed maritime vehicles have become inexpensive, effective, and difficult to detect, posing a severe threat to both military installations and critical civilian infrastructure.

Their ability to operate in swarms and attack from unexpected directions necessitates rapid and precise countermeasures that traditional defense systems often struggle to provide. TOLGA' s ability to deliver such a high rate of fire is essential for effectively engaging these small, fast, and often numerous incoming threats.

With 3,200 rounds per minute, the system can create a " wall of fire" intended to intercept and neutralize even the most maneuverable uncrewed vessels.

This capacity is particularly vital for protecting naval ships, land-based installations, and other high-value targets against synchronized attacks. MKE is a cornerstone firm within the Turkish defense industry, boasting a long history of developing and producing weapons and ammunition for the Turkish Armed Forces.

The company' s focus on innovation and domestic development is central to Turkey' s strategy to achieve greater self-sufficiency and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.

TOLGA is a clear example of this initiative, positioning Turkey as a key player in the development of high-tech defense systems. What truly sets TOLGA apart is the claim that its firing rate is three times higher than that of comparable systems globally.

This provides the system with a significant competitive advantage and underscores Turkey’s capability to manufacture technologically advanced defense materiel.

A superior rate of fire significantly increases the probability of hitting small and fast-moving targets, making TOLGA a potent tool in the fight against future battlefield threats. The development of TOLGA has far-reaching consequences for Turkey' s national security and defense strategy.

The system will bolster the nation' s capacity to protect its borders, coastlines, and strategic facilities.

Furthermore, MKE' s success with TOLGA could potentially open up export opportunities, which may contribute to strengthening the position of the Turkish defense industry in the international market and foster technological cooperation with allies, including NATO nations.

This contributes to the continuous modernization of the armed forces and highlights Turkey’s ambition to be a technological leader.
