Turkey initiates Interpol notice against Netanyahu, experts warn of diplomatic crisis
Turkey has initiated a move to request an international wanted persons notice, known as an Interpol ' Red Notice', against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
This action is justified by allegations of ' crimes committed by Israeli suspects against the citizens of Gaza and those attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.' According to experts who have evaluated Turkey' s push, member states that do not follow up on such a notice will risk a diplomatic crisis with Turkey.
An Interpol Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person wanted by a member state pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.
It is important to note that a Red Notice is not an international arrest warrant issued by Interpol itself, but a notification issued on behalf of a member country that has already issued a national arrest warrant. Experts highlight that resisting the implementation of a Red Notice for crimes directed at Gaza' s population and aid workers would constitute a ' political stance that many states will find difficult to account for.' They also emphasise that Interpol member states choosing not to enforce the Red Notice will have to expect to ' experience a diplomatic crisis with Turkey,' which has taken the initiative for the notice.
Turkey' s initiative must be viewed in the light of the country' s consistently critical stance towards Israel' s military operations in Gaza.
Ankara has repeatedly condemned the actions in the region, referring to Netanyahu as ' the genocidal Netanyahu' in this context, which reflects Turkey' s strong commitment to the issue of justice and accountability. This move by Turkey could have significant international consequences, not only for the relationship between Turkey and Israel, but also for Turkey' s diplomatic ties with other Interpol member countries.
The situation underscores the mounting tensions surrounding the Gaza conflict and the attempts to apply international legal frameworks to hold individuals accountable.
