Turkey Intensifies Extradition of Criminals, 245 Returned So Far in 2026
Turkey' s Minister of Justice, Akın Gürlek, has announced that 245 individuals identified as fugitive criminals have been extradited to Turkey from various countries since the beginning of 2026.
This significant figure underscores Turkey' s intensified efforts within international legal cooperation to bring individuals facing charges back to the country.
The Minister emphasised the government' s uncompromising stance in pursuing those who have fled abroad to evade justice.
The announcement highlighted a recent operation in which 48 individuals were extradited from 12 different countries, contributing to the total count.
These extraditions are the result of ongoing diplomatic and legal processes with international partners and reflect Turkey' s commitment to combating organised crime and ensuring accountability across national borders.
Such efforts are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the judicial system. Among those returned to Turkey are high-ranking leaders of prominent organised crime groups, specifically identified as the “Redkitler” and “Camgözler”.
Minister Gürlek confirmed that the apprehension and subsequent extradition processes for these key individuals have been successfully completed.
This marks a critical step in dismantling complex criminal networks that often operate internationally.
The successful extraditions demonstrate the effectiveness of Turkey' s proactive approach to international law enforcement cooperation.
By working closely with judicial authorities in partner countries, Turkey aims to prevent the nation from becoming a safe haven for criminals, and to ensure that its own fugitives do not find refuge elsewhere.
These operations are vital for national security and public order, as they target individuals involved in various illegal activities. The scale of these extraditions, involving dozens of individuals from a range of countries within a single year, illustrates the breadth of Turkey’s international legal framework and bilateral agreements.
These agreements facilitate the lawful transfer of individuals wanted for crimes ranging from fraud and drug trafficking to more serious offences.
The Turkish Ministry of Justice continues to prioritise the strengthening of these international ties to extend its reach in the global fight against crime.
Minister Gürlek' s statement serves as a clear message that Turkey remains steadfast in its determination to pursue all fugitives, regardless of where they seek refuge.
The ongoing nature of these operations reflects a sustained national policy to uphold justice and deter criminal activity, both domestically and internationally.
