
Turkey introduces advanced embryo technology to improve cattle stocks
At the Eastern Mediterranean Agricultural Research Institute (Doğu Akdeniz Tarımsal Araştırma Enstitüsü) in Adana, Turkey, researchers have launched a pioneering project.
The institute is now freezing embryos from cattle with high genetic potential and making them available to local producers.
This marks a significant milestone as the first implementation of such technology in Turkey, and it aims to substantially improve the country' s cattle breeding. The project utilises a method known as multiple ovulation, which dramatically increases the number of embryos a single cow can produce.
Under normal circumstances, a cow produces one calf per year, but with this advanced technique, between 18 and 20 embryos can be obtained from the same cow within a single year.
This represents a significant increase in the efficiency of the breeding process. The extracted embryos are then frozen, making them easy to store and transport to producers.
Producers can subsequently transfer these embryos into their own cows, ensuring that the offspring inherit the desired genetic traits from high-capacity cattle.
This accelerates the spread of desirable genes throughout the herd.
