Turkey’s sovereign wealth fund invests in electric vehicle manufacturer TOGG
Turkey' s sovereign wealth fund, Türkiye Varlık Fonu (TVF), is preparing to step in as a new partner in the domestic electric vehicle manufacturer TOGG.
This strategic investment signals a strengthening of the state' s commitment to a key project for the country' s industrial future.
Concurrently with the TVF' s entry, it has become known that two of TOGG’s current partners, Vestel Elektronik and Anadolu Grubu Holding, are close to an agreement to sell their shares.
These companies are reportedly planning to sell their stakes to other shareholders and thereby withdraw from the TOGG partnership. TOGG (Türkiye' nin Otomobili Girişim Grubu) represents an ambitious national project for Turkey, with the goal of establishing a domestic producer of electric vehicles, thereby reducing the country' s reliance on imported cars.
The project is part of Turkey' s broader strategy to promote technological independence and build a stronger, knowledge-based economy.
The investment from the sovereign wealth fund underscores the importance the authorities place on the success of this initiative.
The TVF, which manages a significant portfolio of state assets and investments, is tasked with supporting strategic sectors and companies that can contribute to Turkey' s economic growth and competitiveness.
Its involvement in TOGG is in line with the fund’s mandate to invest in projects of national importance that hold the potential to create significant added value for the Turkish economy. The changes in ownership are likely to have an impact on TOGG’s future development and governance structure.
With the TVF on board, a further stabilisation and strengthening of the company' s financial foundation is expected, which could accelerate production and the development of new models.
The phasing out of Vestel Elektronik and Anadolu Grubu Holding may also lead to a more consolidated ownership structure, where the remaining partners, including the state fund, gain a clearer mandate for the company’s future strategy.
For the Turkish automotive industry, this represents a clear indication of state support and an intensified focus on electric vehicles.
This, in turn, could attract further investment and drive innovation within the sector, which is crucial for Turkey’s position in the global market for electric vehicles.
