Turkish court overturns statute of limitations for former judges and prosecutors in Ergenekon case
An Istanbul court has overturned a decision regarding the statute of limitations, paving the way for trials against 21 former judges and prosecutors who were involved in the controversial Ergenekon investigations and trials.
These individuals are accused of being affiliated with the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), and the court' s decision marks a new phase in Turkey' s long-standing campaign against the network.
The previous decision, made by the Bakırköy 11th High Criminal Court, was based on the expiry of the statute of limitations.
However, the Istanbul Anatolian 26th High Criminal Court has now revoked this ruling.
This means that the 21 former judicial officials, whom the Turkish state accuses of facilitating politically motivated trials on behalf of FETÖ, will once again have to face the legal system. The Ergenekon trials were a series of high-profile investigations and legal proceedings in Turkey starting in 2007, targeting alleged secular coup plotters.
Hundreds of high-ranking military officers, journalists, academics, and politicians were indicted.
Over time, the trials became highly contentious, and many of the verdicts were later overturned, as the judicial process was largely considered to have been orchestrated by the Gülen movement, which the Turkish government labels as FETÖ.
FETÖ is accused by Turkish authorities of infiltrating state institutions, including the judiciary and the police, with the aim of eliminating political opponents and exerting influence.
The group is also accused of being behind the 2016 coup attempt.
The trials against the 21 former judges and prosecutors are part of the ongoing process to hold members of this network accountable. Among the most prominent figures who will now be brought to trial are Zekeriya Öz and Fikret Seçen.
These individuals were central prosecutors in the original Ergenekon trials.
The court' s decision underscores Turkey' s continued focus on re-evaluating and reversing decisions from a period when FETÖ allegedly held significant influence over the judicial system.
