Turkey’s TÜRKSAT and ROKETSAN Sign Major Space Cooperation Deal
Turkish state-owned companies TÜRKSAT, the national satellite operator, and defence technology firm ROKETSAN have signed a “Cooperation Protocol for Satellite Launch and Space Systems.” This strategic partnership aims to establish a common foundation for collaboration on satellite and space programmes, significantly bolstering Turkey’s national capabilities in space technology and the defence industry.
TÜRKSAT is responsible for satellite communication, TV broadcasting, and internet services, with ambitious plans for its satellite fleet. ROKETSAN, known for rockets, missile systems, and guided munitions, has expanded its focus to include national satellite launch systems. The protocol leverages TÜRKSAT’s satellite experience with ROKETSAN’s expertise in rocket operations and space systems.
The agreement reflects Turkey’s commitment to developing a robust and independent space industry. By combining their strengths, the companies can accelerate Turkey’s ability to design, produce, and launch its own satellites. This initiative is part of a wider national effort to reduce reliance on foreign technology in critical sectors like defence and space, enhancing strategic autonomy and opening new civilian and military space applications.
Internationally, a strengthened Turkish space industry could position the country as a more significant global player, potentially exporting its indigenous technology. The partnership is expected to pave the way for concrete projects, including new communication and earth observation satellites, alongside associated launch systems.
