Turkish lira remains steady against the dollar following Fed rate hike, financial committee meets

The Turkish lira exhibited unexpected stability against the US dollar on Thursday morning, despite the US Federal Reserve (Fed) recently implementing its first interest rate hike since 2023.

The dollar/Turkish lira exchange rate opened the day flat at 48.67.

Concurrently, it was announced that Turkey' s Financial Stability Committee would meet at 08:00, a session prompted by recent turbulence at the Borsa İstanbul. The lira' s stable opening is a notable development given the broader global financial climate.

While the dollar/lira pair remained calm, the euro began the day at 55.96 Turkish lira.

The currency market' s reaction—or lack thereof—to the Fed' s monetary policy shift will remain a key focal point for economists and investors monitoring the Turkish economy. The Federal Reserve announced its decision to raise the benchmark interest rate, a move approved unanimously with a 12-0 vote.

This marks the central bank' s first rate increase in over three years, an event that typically creates ripples throughout global markets.

Such rate hikes often lead to capital flight from emerging economies, as investors seek higher returns in safer havens.

The fact that the Turkish lira maintained its value suggests a degree of internal resilience or what sources have described as a " controlled progression." In direct response to events at the Borsa İstanbul, Turkey’s primary stock exchange, the Financial Stability Committee has called for a meeting.

The committee is mandated to monitor and ensure the stability of the nation' s financial system.

The gathering signals the authorities' proactive stance toward market developments and their intent to evaluate any measures necessary to maintain confidence in the financial sector. The apparent stability of the lira, combined with the government' s swift response via the Financial Stability Committee, are vital indicators for the Turkish economy.

For households and businesses in Turkey, a stable lira means reduced uncertainty regarding import costs and foreign currency-denominated debt.

Exchange rates have a direct impact on inflation and purchasing power, and a " controlled" currency trajectory is a preferred outcome during periods of economic instability. For international investors, tourists, and foreign residents in Turkey, the stable lira provides a more predictable economic framework.

This can help sustain confidence in the investment climate and make the country more attractive to travellers by reducing exchange rate risk.

Economic data and the government' s subsequent actions will now be the focus for assessing the long-term direction of Turkey' s financial markets.
