Turkish students develop autonomous marine vessel for TEKNOFEST

Students from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (ÇOMÜ) have developed an autonomous unmanned marine vessel that is set to compete in the final of the prestigious TEKNOFEST Mavi Vatan competition.

This vessel, designed by the TALAY team, is distinguished by its capabilities for fully autonomous navigation, advanced target detection, and dynamic task execution within maritime environments.

The development underscores Turkey' s sustained commitment to national technological advancement and innovation within both the defence and maritime sectors, driven forward by young engineering talent. The vessel represents a significant advancement in unmanned maritime technology.

Its core functions include the ability to operate entirely independently, which minimises the need for human intervention and increases efficiency in complex environments.

Fully autonomous navigation means the vessel can plan its own routes and avoid obstacles without remote control.

The target detection systems enable it to identify and track objects of interest, while the dynamic task execution ensures it can adapt to changing operational requirements and perform multiple missions either sequentially or in parallel. TEKNOFEST is Turkey' s largest technology festival and a national symbol of the country' s ambitions in innovation and engineering.

The festival is held annually to promote technological development and inspire young people to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). " Mavi Vatan" (Blue Homeland) is a specialised segment of TEKNOFEST that focuses on maritime technologies, in line with Turkey' s strategic doctrine for maritime interests and regional security.

The competition thus provides a crucial arena for testing and showcasing technologies with direct relevance to national security and maritime economic interests. The TALAY team' s project highlights the growing capacity within Turkish universities to drive technological innovation.
