Turkish wage earners experience sharp decline in purchasing power

Wage earners in Turkey are experiencing an increasingly deep erosion of their purchasing power, particularly those who did not receive a temporary salary increase in July.

This development means that household budgets are no longer sufficient to cover everyday expenses, placing many families under significant financial strain in the face of rising living costs.

The situation is clearly illustrated by new calculations.

The ' starvation threshold'—defined as the minimum amount a family of four needs to cover basic nutritional requirements—has risen to a staggering 36,940 Turkish Lira (TRY).

Simultaneously, the poverty line, which includes costs for housing, transport, education, and healthcare, has reached 120,325 TRY.

This highlights a dramatic increase in the costs required for a decent standard of living. There is a growing gap between wages and living costs.

The net minimum wage in Turkey is now 8,864 TRY below the starvation threshold, meaning that even a family living on the minimum wage cannot meet their most basic food needs.

This underscores the severity of the economic crisis affecting the country' s low-income groups, where incomes are failing to keep pace with inflation.

Furthermore, calculations have shown that the monthly purchasing power deficit for wage earners has reached approximately 5,000 TRY.

This refers to the amount by which salaries fall short of maintaining a previous standard of living or covering actual consumption costs.

Such a gap necessitates real cutbacks for families, forcing them to reduce their consumption of essential goods and services. The persistent erosion of real wages has broader implications for the Turkish economy.

Reduced purchasing power weakens households' ability to save and invest, and may lead to a decline in domestic consumption.

This is a significant factor in a country where consumer spending is often a key driver of economic growth.

This trend contributes to an atmosphere of economic uncertainty and could potentially impact market confidence.

For foreign investors and travellers, such a situation may signal persistent inflationary pressure and challenges regarding the cost of living, even though it primarily affects local residents directly.

The authorities are facing pressure to implement measures to stabilize price levels and strengthen the population' s purchasing power. Source: Haberglobal
