TUSAŞ and ROKETSAN sign contract for the HÜRSAT-2 space project
Turkish aerospace and defence giant TUSAŞ and missile manufacturer ROKETSAN have signed the HÜRSAT-2 project contract during the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Antalya.
This collaboration between two of Turkey' s premier technology companies represents a significant step forward in bolstering the nation' s indigenous capabilities within space technology and promoting independence in a strategically critical sector. TUSAŞ, also known as Turkish Aerospace Industries, is Turkey' s leading organisation in the design, development, manufacture, and integration of aerospace systems, ranging from fighter jets and drones to satellites.
ROKETSAN, meanwhile, is a renowned player in the field of rocket and missile systems, playing a vital role in Turkey' s defence industry.
Their joint effort in the HÜRSAT-2 project underscores Turkey' s ambition to develop advanced, domestically produced technology. The HÜRSAT-2 project builds upon Turkey' s existing efforts in space technology, where previous HÜRSAT programmes have focused on the development of satellite capabilities.
Although specific details regarding HÜRSAT-2 have not been disclosed in full, the name and the companies involved suggest it involves the development of sophisticated satellite systems, likely for reconnaissance, earth observation, or communications purposes.
Such projects are essential for strengthening Turkey' s independence and national security. The partnership between TUSAŞ and ROKETSAN is strategically important for Turkey' s long-term goal of becoming a self-sufficient actor in the aerospace sector.
By combining TUSAŞ’s expertise in platform design and integration with ROKETSAN’s knowledge of rocket motors and propulsion systems, Turkey is enabled to develop complete systems, ranging from launch vehicles to the satellites themselves.
This reduces reliance on foreign suppliers and positions the country for future growth in the space industry. The signing took place during the prestigious International Astronautical Congress (IAC), one of the world' s largest gatherings for space industry stakeholders.
That the contract was signed on Turkish soil, in Antalya, during such an important international event, sends a clear signal regarding Turkey' s growing commitment and ambitions in space travel.
It also provides a platform to showcase the country' s technological advancements to a global audience. This collaboration represents not only an important milestone for Turkey’s national space programme, but also a contribution to the country’s overall technological sovereignty.
By investing in its own space technology, Turkey strengthens its defence capabilities, fosters innovation in related industries, and creates valuable jobs.
In the long term, this could also lead to increased exports of Turkish space technology and a stronger position for the nation in the international space race.
