Warning issued over widespread holiday booking fraud: Over 268,000 attacks uncovered

The cybersecurity company Kaspersky has reported a significant increase in fraudulent attempts targeting travellers.

Over the past year, the firm has recorded more than 268,000 cyberattacks specifically designed to exploit travel and transport booking services.

These attacks are engineered to deceive users into disclosing sensitive information, particularly bank and payment details.

The findings highlight a growing threat to people planning holidays, both domestically and internationally, including popular destinations such as Turkey.

Travellers must be extra vigilant when booking flights, hotels, or other transport services online, as scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their methods. Scammers frequently employ fake websites, emails, or messages that imitate well-known travel companies.

Their primary objective is to steal users' personal information and financial data.

By posing as legitimate businesses, fraudsters attempt to gain access to account numbers, credit card details, and passwords, which can lead to significant financial loss and identity theft for those affected.

According to Kaspersky, Emirates and Uber were among the brands most frequently misused in these scam attempts.

This indicates that popular and well-known brands within the travel and transport sector are attractive targets for criminals precisely because of the large number of users they attract globally. For travellers, this means that it is more important than ever to practise good digital hygiene.

Always check that the website address is correct and secure—look for 'https://' and the padlock symbol—before entering any payment information.

Be sceptical of unexpected offers or messages that demand immediate action, especially if they contain links or request personal information.

This development has direct consequences for anyone planning a trip, as the risk of being exposed to fraud during the booking process is rising.

Remaining informed and cautious is essential for protecting oneself against financial loss and ensuring a safe and trouble-free holiday experience. Source: Turizmguncel
