EasyJet Warns of Long Queues at EU Airports with New Biometric…
EasyJet CEO Kenton Jarvis has urged European Union countries to prepare for significant challenges at borders, particularly airports, with the full implementation of the new biometric Entry/Exit System (EES). He warns that the system has already led to long queues at some border crossings.
The EES is designed to register the entry and exit of non-EU/EEA citizens crossing the Schengen border, replacing manual passport stamping with biometric data collection, including fingerprints and facial images. While its aim is to strengthen border control and enhance efficiency, Jarvis expresses concern that it poses a major risk for delays, especially impacting tourists from the UK and other non-Schengen countries.
Even though EEA citizens are not directly covered by the EES for Schengen entry, the anticipated general capacity challenges at airports could still affect their transit times and overall travel experience. These issues are expected to be most pronounced at popular tourist destinations and during peak seasons, indirectly affecting many travelers to Turkey who often transit via EU airports. The travel sector fears these new procedures could disrupt the seamless travel experience and potentially impact tourism flows to the region.
