Speaker of the Turkish Parliament calls for the release of Tunisian opposition leader

Numan Kurtulmuş, the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), has stated that it is Turkey' s fervent wish that Rached Ghannouchi, the imprisoned leader of the Ennahda movement and former Speaker of the Tunisian Parliament, be released.

The statement follows Ghannouchi' s decision to end a hunger strike and a protest involving the refusal of medication.

Kurtulmuş made specific reference to Ghannouchi’s current state of health and the conditions of his detention.

Ghannouchi, a prominent figure in Tunisian politics, has been held in custody in Tunisia.

This announcement from the Turkish parliamentary leader highlights Ankara' s ongoing engagement with political developments throughout the region. In his remarks, Kurtulmuş issued a clear appeal: " Our greatest wish is for him to receive all necessary medical support, to be placed in fair and humane conditions as demanded by human dignity, and for him to be released." This direct appeal from a high-ranking Turkish official underscores Turkey' s concern for Ghannouchi' s welfare and legal rights.

The statement from the head of Turkey' s legislative body represents a diplomatic signal concerning a political figure within a sovereign nation.

Such statements from high-level officials carry significant weight in international relations and reflect Turkey' s stance on issues related to human rights and political freedoms in countries with which it maintains diplomatic ties.

It further serves to emphasise Turkey' s interest in regional stability and the democratic processes currently unfolding in North Africa.
