Turkish minister confirms shipwreck in the Sea of Marmara; 10 Turkish sailors missing
The Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, has announced that a ship sank rapidly in the Sea of Marmara following a collision, and that all ten crew members, identified as Turkish nationals, are currently missing.
The incident, which involved two vessels, took place off the coast of Silivri.
Uraloğlu stated that an emergency call was received at 03:26 and emphasised that the vessel had likely foundered.
He noted the rapid nature of the sinking, which, according to the minister, occurred within approximately 11 minutes.
The area where the collision took place has a depth of around 950 metres. The minister further confirmed that there were ten sailors on board the sunken ship, including the captains.
He specified that all ten individuals were Turkish citizens and that efforts are currently underway to manage this serious maritime accident.
The Sea of Marmara is a strategically vital waterway in Turkey, connecting the Black Sea via the Bosphorus Strait to the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean via the Dardanelles.
It is an area of significant maritime traffic, both domestic and international, and the incident underscores the challenges associated with maritime safety in the region.
