Yılmaz: Turkey must expand trade framework beyond tariff cuts

Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz has emphasised the need for a comprehensive trade framework that extends beyond mere tariff reductions.

The objective is to strengthen Turkey’s economic ties globally and attract investment, with a focus on streamlining customs procedures and supporting digital trade.

This initiative is intended to drive growth within the services sector and stimulate increased investment in the country. Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz has recently stated that the country should look beyond simple tariff reductions in its trade agreements.

He believes that the focus must be directed towards establishing a much more comprehensive trade framework to promote economic development.

The statement was made in connection with Turkey' s efforts to modernise its trade relations. Yılmaz specified that the new framework should include measures to ease customs procedures and provide significant support for digital trade.

Furthermore, a central goal is to pave the way for an increase in trade in services and to facilitate increased foreign investment in Turkey.

This indicates a broader strategy to diversify and strengthen the economy. Focus on modernisation and investmentThe Vice President expressed his satisfaction with the work currently underway in the Committee on Trade Negotiations.

This work aims to implement existing systems more effectively and expand their scope.

The initiative builds on a decision made last year and highlights a sustained effort towards economic reform. For Turkey, this signifies a strategy to increase the country' s competitiveness in the global market.

More efficient trade and the attraction of investment can contribute to job creation, increased production, and a strengthened lira over time.

It also addresses the need to adapt to an increasingly digitised global economy. Consequences for business and growthFor Turkish companies, such a framework could simplify export and import processes, as well as open new markets for service providers.

Increased investment could lead to economic growth, which in turn could positively affect household purchasing power.

Although not explicitly mentioned, increased economic activity could indirectly support tourism and related industries by strengthening the overall economy.
