BYD Suspends Electric Vehicle Factory Plans in Turkey

BYD, one of the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, has suspended its plans to establish a production factory in Turkey. This decision is part of a strategic shift by the Chinese company to focus on a broader European localisation strategy, which marks a significant development for Turkey’s industrial policy.

The proposed factory in Turkey was anticipated to boost the country’s economic development, creating jobs and strengthening its position in the growing EV sector. BYD’s move to put the project on hold aims to reinforce its presence and manufacturing capabilities directly in other European regions, prioritising supply chains closer to major consumer markets.

This decision highlights the competitive landscape for foreign direct investment, with Turkey actively seeking to attract international companies, particularly in high-tech industries. The suspension of a significant investment like BYD’s may prompt discussions about Turkey’s investment climate and its ability to compete with other European nations for large industrial projects.
