Card payments in Turkey neared 3 trillion lira in July

Total card payments in Turkey, which include transactions made with credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards, reached a significant total of 2,974.9 billion Turkish lira in July.

This figure equates to nearly 3 trillion lira and marks a substantial increase of 37 percent compared to July of the previous year.

This growth in card-based transactions highlights a sustained high level of consumer activity and economic dynamism in Turkey.

Card payments serve as a key indicator of expenditure by households and businesses, providing a snapshot of domestic demand and the circulation of money within the economy. Although a nominal increase of 37 percent is impressive, it is essential to view this in the context of Turkey' s current economic climate.

The country has experienced a prolonged period of high inflation.

This means that while the total amount spent via cards has grown sharply, the prices of goods and services have also risen.

Consequently, the real growth in consumption volume, when adjusted for price increases, will be lower than the nominal growth.

For the business sector, this development signifies increased revenue and a continued trend toward digital payment solutions, which may contribute to more formalised transactions.

For tourists and foreign residents in Turkey, the figures confirm that card payments are a dominant and convenient method for daily expenses, whether for hotels, restaurants, or shopping.

The rise in card usage also reflects the adaptation of households and businesses to current economic conditions.

Such data is vital for economic analysts and policymakers who monitor consumption patterns, inflationary pressures, and the general health of the Turkish economy. Source: Haberglobal
