EU Steel Quota Threatens Turkish Exports with Billions in Losses

Uğur Dalbeler, President of the Steel Exporters’ Association (ÇİB), informed Bloomberg HT that the European Union’s decision to implement a new steel import quota starting July 1 will negatively affect the Turkish steel sector. This initiative poses a significant challenge for Turkish producers and exporters, introducing uncertainty for future steel exports to the EU.

Dalbeler specifically highlighted the economic risks, estimating potential losses for Turkish steel exports to be between $2.5 billion and $3 billion. This figure underscores the substantial financial pressure the new regulations could exert on one of Turkey’s key industries, which already navigates a complex global market.

The steel sector is a vital component of the Turkish economy, contributing significantly to the nation’s total export revenues. A reduction in export capacity or volume to the EU, a major trading partner, will have direct implications for national income and industrial activity within Turkey.

This development occurs at a time when Turkey’s economic performance, particularly its export figures, is closely monitored for its impact on the trade balance and the broader economy. Changes in trade policy with significant partners like the EU frequently necessitate rapid adjustments within Turkish industries to maintain competitiveness.
