Turkey’s Finance Minister Şimşek: Disinflation to Continue with Delay
Turkey’s Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek has stated that the country’s disinflation process, a sustained reduction in the inflation rate, will continue but with an expected delay of several months. Şimşek made these remarks during a meeting of the Turkish Banks Association (Türkiye Bankalar Birliği).
The minister’s comments highlight the government’s ongoing focus on tackling high inflation, which has been a significant challenge for the Turkish economy. A delay indicates that inflation may not fall as rapidly as initially hoped in the immediate future, before an anticipated pick-up later. Disinflation implies a slowing of price growth, even as prices continue to rise.
A prolonged period of high costs could affect household purchasing power, consumption, investment decisions, and employment growth. Şimşek’s statement suggests the central bank may need to maintain its tight monetary policy longer, potentially influencing interest rates for loans and investments and the stabilisation of the Turkish lira. The government still anticipates a positive trend long-term, but with a more realistic timeline.
